Jumping Mouse Children’s Center continues to serve as an
educational resource for master level internship learning. The uniqueness of the
program allows each intern to experience working with children in ways that are
not usually found in other agency internships. Each intern receives supervision,
the opportunity to learn with other therapists on the staff, and the
encouragement and environment for individual professional growth. The child’s
process is documented with slides, pictures, and written commentaries. Interns
consult with the staff regarding each child’s progress as well as with the
adults in the child’s world, such as parents, teachers, and counselors.
As any master level training program is required to offer,
Jumping Mouse provides each intern with an exposure to assessments, diagnosis,
treatment planning, and play therapy. What makes this training program rather
unique is its belief in honoring and following the child’s process as the guide
to play therapy. Creative materials are offered which support a particular
child’s journeying to "the far away land" of reclaiming self. Interns learn to
approach play therapy from the metaphoric world that the child is still living
within. This world expresses itself in play, in the use of hundreds of small
miniatures. What is problematic is mediated through play. Interns learn about
the child’s perceptions through learning more about myth and symbol, while still
attending to the necessary requirements of successful play therapy.
Jumping Mouse Children’s Center has trained interns from
institutions, which include University of Washington, Pacifica University,
Seattle University, Antioch University Seattle, and Evergreen State College. In
a time when long term depth therapy is left to private therapists, JMCC sustains
agency training and support. Past interns have been able to carry forward their
learning into other agencies that serve the community.
